The Perfect Private Jets for NBA Teams

Aside from having to play the Lakers and Kobe Bryant, the San Antonio Spurs also were faced with overcoming a challenge presented by their charter airline before they even arrived in Los Angeles.

The Spurs’ charter flight was grounded in New Orleans for eleven hours while a maintenance issue was resolved. In fact, the Spurs’ charter company seems to be in a somewhat tenuous financial position, so much so that Donnie Walsh, the new general manager of the New York Knicks, has offered the Knicks’ team plane for the Spurs’ use for the remainder of the playoffs. We’ve heard of “future considerations” being included in pro sports trades, but never the use of the team’s private jet. Don’t be surprised if the Spurs suddenly trade Tony Parker to the Knicks for a second round draft pick and six more months of charter jet usage.

Although it sounds like the Spurs’ old Boeing 727 will not be toting around an NBA team anytime soon, this story has made us wonder what sort of transportation we can expect some of the NBA’s other teams to use in the near future.

Los Angeles Lakers. With the league’s reigning MVP, its most high profile head coach, and a front row at the Staples Center that could be confused with the seating from Oscar night (or at least the latest lineup on TNT), there is no question that the Lakers would be rocking a fleet of Gulfstream V’s. The G-V is “the” jet to park on the runway at any big event if you are looking to impress. One G-V for Kobe and his hardware, and five for the remainder of the guys should suffice.

New York Knicks. The Knicks have come upon some hard times. The Isiah Thomas Era appears to be officially over, but its aftereffects will be felt for quite a while. Perhaps the highlight (or lowlight) of his infamous reign came during the Anucha Browne Sanders sexual harassment trial, where, among other things, we found out about Stephon Marbury’s infamous “truck party.” We feel that “Starbury’s” truck is probably the best means of transport for this team on the mend. No wonder Donnie could afford to loan the Spurs his jet.

Boston Celtics. Sure the C’s are one of the NBA’s legendary franchises. But up until the arrival of the Boston Three Party this year, not too many chowda lova’s were braving the elements to attend Celtics games at the “New Garden.” Seems that a lot of the C’s fans this year are perceived as bandwagon jumpers – just ask Mike Bibby. But we have the perfect jet for the C’s and all of their New England fanatics – the airbus A380. As the world’s largest passenger jet, the A380 should have plenty of room for not only the Three Amigos and the rest of the team, but for every Bostonian who has rediscovered that May and June aren’t just for assessing the Red Sox’s chances for the fall.

Cleveland Cavaliers. Sure the Cavs made an attempt to get some help for their superstar LeBron James with a late season trade that brought in Wally Szczerbiak, Delonte West, Joe Smith and Ben Wallace, but as was painfully evident in their series against the Celtics, the Cavs are essentially LeBron and four other dudes against the world. Bron-bron might be the league’s second best player, but that is not enough to make up for the flotsam he is surrounded with. With that in mind, King James might as well gravytrain the Nike Jet or rent an UltraLite. The rest of the scrubs can stay home.

Denver Nuggets. They may have flamed out brilliantly against the Lakers in the first round, but it looks as though the Nuggets may be making a run at capturing the Portland “Jail Blazers” old title of most incarcerated NBA team. DerMarr Johnson was popped last year for resisting arrest and interfering with police during a disturbance outside a nightclub, in which police were forced to taze the 6 foot 9 inch forward. This year star Carmelo Anthony was arrested on suspicion of DUI while cruising around in his Mercedes at 4 am, only to be tagged a few weeks later for driving 15 to 19 mph over the speed limit. At least ‘Melo wasn’t
at a “nightclub.” Lets not forget that the Nug’s roster still includes Allen Iverson, who while in Philly was arrested on 14 felony and misdemeanor charges, including assault, terroristic threats and weapons charges in connection with an incident that occurred while he was looking for his wife. Allegedly. A judge later dismissed all but two misdemeanor counts against Iverson. Maybe A.I. had the same lawyer that helped teammate Kenyon Martin slip out of serious trouble for driving 101 mph in a 30 mph zone and 103 mph in a 55 mph zone – all within the same month. Here you go Nuggets – please keep your hands out of the aisles as you fly Con Air.

Memphis Grizzlies. The Griz have been the league standard for futility since joining the Association in 1995. Although they have made the playoffs three times in franchise history, they have yet to win a playoff game. But don’t say they’ve never done anything to up the standard of play in the NBA – their gift of Pau Gasol to the Lakers this year in exchange for a Hot Pocket and a bag of used balls reestablished a marquee team in one of the league’s marquee cities. This just in, the Grizzlies just traded their team jet to the Lakers for an Xbox.

San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs may not be the flashiest, or the most recognizable, or the most exciting, or most energetic team in the NBA, but they do one thing really well – they win. With a mix of foreign-born players and the force that is Tim Duncan, the Spurs have won four titles in eight years. Yeah, they might
be a little old, but we remember another underrated form of transport that was a little old and made up of spare parts…the Millenium Falcon.
